Teaching Online Checklist

Organizational Checklist:
  • Attend initial planning session(s) with Instructional Designer, Trainer, or Faculty Distance Education Mentor.

  • Fill out Curriculum Proposal Forms

  • Develop all course materials for delivery via the web (i.e., HTML format): Class web site, Welcome document, Minimum course requirements (e.g., hardware and software, e-mail and web access, etc.) document, Syllabi, etc.

  • Secure permission to use copyrighted items on your web site, or prepare an interim strategy

  • Plan student orientation (will this be F2F or web-based?)  What will the student need to know in order to be successful in this class?

  • Plan midterm, final exam, assignments and any other pertinent course documents.

  • Create a student contact list. This will include important contact information about each student: name, address, phone, e-mail address, etc.  Also, decide how you will communicate with students (Listserv, web-based bulletin board, etc.).

  • Preview all course documents (both print and HTML) for typos and other errors.

  • Pilot class technologies. If possible, try to pilot the technologies that you will use in your distance class, with your traditional students. They will give you important feedback on the usability of the technologies and you will have plenty of time to address these issues before your class begins.

Instructional Checklist:
  • If they haven't already, encourage your students to take the self-assessment survey on the Cuesta distance education site: http://library.cuesta.edu/distance/survey.htm This online assessment will help students to see the kinds of characteristics needed for success in an online course.

  • Get to know your students. This is more difficult in an online setting. Create a questionnaire that will provide you with important facts about your students. Ask students to send digital photos of themselves.

  • Ask students to take the online learning style inventory to help them to understand how they prefer to learn. This inventory can be modified so that the results can be sent to the instructor. See example at: http://library.cuesta.edu/distance/new/lrnstyle.htm  You will need the following username/password:
username= cuesta
password= online
  • Contact your students early and often.

  • Continue to prepare additional learning/enrichment activities, supplemental course materials, etc.. Building your online class is a continual process

  • Prepare and post study guides and/or self-help quizzes to your class web site.

  • Maintain enrollment records and post grades frequently.

  • Try to insure a quick turnaround on student evaluations. Students require timely feedback in a distance environment.

  • Prepare for technical glitches. Be ready with backups and be ready to "flex" your policies to adjust to the conditions.
