Dear Student,

Welcome to distance education at Cuesta College! My name is Dr. David Diaz, and I will be your instructor in the upcoming online version of health education (HE ED 2). This letter is to inform you of some important details prior to the commencement of the Spring XXXX online class. Please read this page carefully!!

Class Requirements

As you already know, you need to have an e-mail account and access to the World Wide Web. You will also need to purchase your textbook and CD-ROM for the class. The textbook "Understanding Your Health" (sixth edition) is in the bookstore and is a required text. Also required is the Whole Health CD-ROM. This CD contains lecture notes, multimedia slides, text only and MP3 (audio) versions of lectures, all the assignment pages, a multimedia web reference tool and a general health/wellness reference tool. I will review the features of the CD-ROM at our orientation meeting

Computer Requirements

The following requirements are necessary for this class:

  • Web Browser: Netscape Navigator 4.61 or above (Mac, Windows), Microsoft Explorer 4.0 or above (Windows).
  • Computer Specs: Power Macintosh or Windows (Pentium) computer with at least 4x CD-ROM, and a 200 Mhz processor speed. Also, you should have a minimum of 64 Mb of system RAM (memory).
  • Quick Time: Quick Time software version 4.0 or above and Quick Time plug-in for browser. You can download the Quick Time player and plug-in here.
  • Operating System:
    • Mac Users: Power Macintosh with OS 8.0 or above.
    • PC Users: Windows 98 with Quick Time 4.0 or above and Quick Time browser plug-in; Windows 95 with Quick Time 4.0 and Quick Time plug-in; Windows 3.1 with Quick Time 4.0 or above and Quick Time plug-in.

Mandatory Meetings

We'll have three mandatory class meetings. The first meeting is on Wednesday, January 24 at 7:00 PM. Notice that this is the second Wednesday of the semester. This meeting will be in room Bio. 2401 (Biological Sciences forum) and will include an important orientation. The second (March 14th) and third (May 16th) meetings will be for other activities including the midterm and final exams. All mandatory meetings begin at 7:00 PM sharp. There is no provision for anyone who misses any of these classes. In extreme emergencies, we will have alternative testing available on the Cuesta College campus. I will give you more info on this when we meet for the orientation.

First Assignment

Your first assignment is to go to the Whole Health CD-ROM and to the "Distance Learning" area and click on "Student Bio Post." Please fill out this section which includes your name, e-mail address, and a short biography. This assignment will be due a week after the first class, but I would appreciate it if you would complete this assignment early. Important Note: you will need to use the following username and password to enter certain parts of the Whole Health web site. Whenever you go to a section of the web site that returns a dialog box asking you for your username and password, you will use the following:

Username: xxxxx

Password: xxxxxxxxx

You should also print out a copy of the class syllabus and bring it with you to the first class.
